The Ask
Each student in my Craft of Visual Communications class was given the assignment of creating a poster promoting the Orange and Blue Film Festival, a student-led film festival hosted by the UF College of Journalism and Communications. My poster designs were chosen to be the official posters for the festival. They will be printed and distributed to promote the event and will be given to each participant to commemorate the 2nd annual festival.
We were asked to create an overarching theme for the poster that revolves around their main concepts, "Film Begins Here" and "Bigger. Bolder. Better."
The softwares used were Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
Ideation
After looking at the brand framework and guidelines for colors and typography, I began thinking about my overarching theme. The frameworks that guided my designs were "launching the next generation of storytellers forward" and "forging champions 'neath the orange and blue victorious." I wanted to include different elements that could be found on a film production set, like a roll of film, a director's chair, a camera, and a film clapboard. My three preliminary options can be found below, which includes the final option submitted on the left.

Final Poster

The concept behind my poster was the ladder of success. Student filmmakers have the opportunity to use this film festival as a starting point for their film careers, thus the copy "Film Begins Here." Moreover, when they climb the ladder as they move throughout their career, film guides their way up and accompanies them along the way.
After researching different case studies like the Tribeca Festival and Sundance Film Festival, I chose my main design principles to be movement and saturation. I implemented these principles through shadows, a visual hierarchy, and brand colors (like Core Orange and Dark Blue).
